It’s not every day you get to work on a centennial campaign. This is the kind of project that probably only comes along once in a career. So when KEMET Electronics Corporation asked us to help them share the story of their 100 year anniversary, there was a resounding “YES” across the whole team.

We knew there would be a lot of hours dedicated to research, conceptualizing, and development, and we couldn’t wait to get started. Our approach at Gallardo Labs is designed to be collaborative, so once we got the go-ahead, we quickly scheduled client meetings at KEMET’s headquarters in Ft. Lauderdale, reached out to key business owners and executives to set up stakeholder interviews, and jumped into brainstorming sessions.

The culmination of our efforts for the #KEMET100 campaign added up to one centennial video, a series of social media posts and blog articles with custom graphics and illustrations, a microsite with a detailed interactive timeline, and a content strategy for the brand to follow for the rest of the year. Just ahead, here’s a look at the case study for the KEMET 100 Centennial Campaign. For a more in-depth look, visit our campaign page.

Honoring KEMET’s Heritage While Unveiling the Future

One of the bigger challenges we were faced with from the start was how to present this company to the public for the first time as a very advanced tech enterprise that was shaping the future while still honoring the decades of upon decades of research and history that got them there.

KEMET was well known within their industry, but consumers didn’t know their name despite the fact that the average American owns about 15,000 of KEMET’s components without knowing it. KEMET’s parts were in every household (in their tablets, phones, laptops, refrigerators, and even cars) but were yet to become a household name. We were aiming to change that.

The solution was to showcase the global milestones they’d been a part of as well as highlight the implications they’d had on the world as we know it (i.e. KEMET had been integral in making the Apollo mission a success but only employees were aware of this).

We had the pleasure of working with the historians at The Winthrop Group to provide a basic framework for each era in KEMET’s history. They also dug up archived documents, photos, and patents for content. Finally, we integrated snapshots of technology they are developing for the future to complete a forward-facing campaign.

KEMET 100 Years Microsite

The microsite concept was based on our intimate understanding of who KEMET is as a brand, how they have evolved over the years, and who they strive to be in the future. We wanted to keep some main elements from their original guidelines including colors and font but defined new boundaries when it came to style, tone, and user experience.

Blog Articles & Social Media

The social strategy was built for KEMET to post captivating graphics and animations in reference to key dates in history or to highlight related blog articles. One major goal of the campaign was to give them the tools they need to jump into trending social conversations, using their involvement in the largest technological advances of the century.

KEMET 100 Video

For the video, we first created a detailed concept and storyboard for each keyframe. Using stock footage we found of current events and industry-changing technology that KEMET was a part of, mixed with actual photography from the KEMET archives and the style we developed for the campaign overall, we were able to achieve a timeless, seamless look and feel.
